Julie Ann's Story
School
High school was fun. My mom opened up opportunities for me and my friends to make our house a safe haven for anyone to come and spend time. She put out paint for us to paint the picture window and trusted us to paint the pool with pictures of whales and our own names and faces. Friends came at any time of day or night, including Darrell climbing the ladder in the wee hours of the morning, to have fun, swim or just hang out. The best part was no one ever in all those years ever had a fight or brought any drugs or alcohol onto the property except for the last night of graduation when we had our one and only fling in the big car circle at the end of the drive. Even the cop who pulled into the ...Expand for more
circle never figured out there was alcohol at that party. No one ever gave reason for anyone to complain. We were all good kids.
College
College was strange. I had lived in Israel in 1968-69 and came back to a world turned over by the 60's revolution. College wasn't what I expected. It was a place where everyone was rebelling, going and not going to classes, a place where the waters were being tested in extreme ways never before done. Women were burning bras, buildings were being burned and the police were using tear gas to stop student demonstrations. It was a time of change long over due. It was truly the happiest days of my life. It was the first time I actually felt like I fit in somewhere.
